Thursday softball results include Cotter falling in state tournament

Despite the weather, four area softball teams were able to play their state tournament openers on Thursday.

Cotter was eliminated in the first round of the Class 2A State Tournament. The Lady Warriors went to Prairie Grove and suffered a 10-0 loss to Mount Vernon-Enola.

Three area softball teams began action in the Class 3A State Tournament at Lincoln. Salem was bounced from the tournament with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Atkins. Melbourne’s comeback fell short as they lost to Lamar 9-6. Valley Springs advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-3 victory over Dumas.

In Missouri, Ava’s softball team was able to punch its ticket to the state tournament after playing the championship game of the Class 2, District 4 Tournament at Mansfield. Ava was able to beat another group of of Lady Bears from Willow Springs 13-3. Ava improves to 18-6 on the season, and they’ll travel to Houston on Tuesday for their quarterfinal game in the Class 2 State Tournament.
