A man from Boone County has been arrested after using a library copier to copy and forge checks.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on March 28, 49-year-old Christopher J. McElroy allegedly used a copier at the Boone County Library to forge a check.
An employee spoke with authorities March 29 and stated McElroy left a copy of the forged check on the copy machine. Authorities then watched video surveillance where they witnessed McElroy write his name on the check along with a social security number and a bank name.
Due to the bank name being written on the check, authorities made contact with the branch manager who stated McElroy went to the bank on March 28 where he attempted to cash the check and open a bank account. The manager denied McElroy the ability to cash the check, where he then took it and left.
Authorities then went to McElroy’s last known address. Upon arrival, McElroy was questioned about the forged check and he replied, “I ain’t never seen that check.”
He allegedly originally stated he did not print the check but when further questioned he stated, “Wait, actually I did copy it.”
McElroy stated he found the check torn apart at a pavilion in Minnie Harris Park, when asked who the check was originally wrote out to, it was determined to be the Capps Church of Christ.
McElroy has been charged with felony counts of unauthorized use of another persons property to facilitate certain crimes, and second degree forgery.
