Baxter Health is taking steps to help reduce the risk of violence against their healthcare workers and create a safer environment for patients and all who visit the hospital.

Starting Monday, Baxter Health will be implementing a new sign-in process for all visitors who enter the hospital after visiting hours, between 9 and 6 in the morning. Visitors will be greeted by a Security Officer at the Cline Emergency Center corridor and asked to provide their name and the reason for their visit before they can access areas beyond the emergency department. Baxter Health states this new sign-in process is the first step of many to help better protect patients, visitors, and staff members after normal visiting hours.

Recent reports have shown an increase in violence against healthcare workers, particularly nurses. A 2022 survey by National Nurses United found almost half of nurses nationwide reported an escalation in workplace violence. This is an increase of 57% from September, 2021, and a staggering 119% rise from March, 2021, as cited by Becker’s Hospital Review.

Baxter Health President and CEO Ron Peterson states “Baxter Health is unwavering in its commitment to the safety and well-being of everyone who visits or works at the hospital. We believe that this sign-in process will play a crucial role in enhancing the protection of our patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we roll out this significant new policy,”
