A Stone County woman is facing theft charges after allegedly using a debit card of a deceased man she once was in a relationship with.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on June 22 the Stone County Sheriff’s Office was contacted for a report of unusual debit card transactions on an account of a deceased man. The complainant stated the man was found dead on May 21 by the alleged suspect 53-year-old Lois Honeycutt, who at one time had been in a relationship with, but had remained friends after their relationship dissolved.

The complainant provided deputies with bank statements showing multiple transactions the day after the man’s death totaling over $500.

On July 7, the sister of the deceased called the Sheriff’s Office and stated her brother had been hospitalized for a respiratory problem and released to a nursing home for rehabilitation. She told authorities he was released on May 20 and appeared to be doing fine. She confirmed Honeycutt and her brother remained friends after a romantic relationship.

She told deputies she and her husband went to her brother’s home to check on the property and upon arrival, she found Honeycutt and her boyfriend leaving the house carrying her brother’s lock box which contained all of his important documents. She took the box from Honeycutt and the two exchanged words about her brother’s property. After examining her brother’s wallet, she observed his debit card was missing.

On July 10, deputies went to one of the retail locations to view video footage and confirmed Honeycutt used the debit card of the deceased. When deputies contacted her the next day, she shouted explicit language and hung up the phone.

Honeycutt faces one felony count of theft of property and one misdemeanor charge of fraudulent use of a debit or credit card. She was arrested and released on July 25 from the Stone County Detention Center on $5,000 bond.
