The Izard County Sheriff’s Office has received a large grant to help combat substance abuse. The grant, which totals nearly $665,000, will fund Izard County deputies in their role with the Sixteenth Judicial District Drug Task Force which includes Izard, Fulton, Stone, Independence and Cleburne Counties. The money is part of $4.4 billion awarded to law enforcement agencies across the country by the Justice Department.

The mission of the project is to reduce the impact of substance misuse, including overdose deaths, in the area. This will be accomplished by helping more people with Substance Use Disorder to receive treatment instead of entering the criminal justice system. This project will also help increase community awareness about substance misuse and improve the ability of law enforcement agencies and communities to respond to overdoses.

The Justice Department says having designated agents from the Izard County Sheriff’s Department on the district task force will ensure more cases involving substance use can be referred for peer support and treatment arrangements can be made as quickly as possible.
