
After the first two days of candidate filings for the 2024 ballot, a few area races have been developed.
In Baxter County, current District 7 Justice of the Peace Charles Osgood will have an opponent for the Republican primary in March. Osgood and his challenger, Bob Nault, have both filed in the Baxter County Courthouse.
Two candidates have also filed for the District 2 justice of the peace position, currently held by Angela DeGroote. Johnny Rickman will run as a Democrat, and Mike McDonald will run as a Republican.
Six other candidates have filed for the Baxter County Quorum Court. The incumbents include District 1 JP Dennis Frank, District 3 JP Rick Steiner and District 9 JP Cameron Davis. Other candidates include Lisa House for District 6, Eddie Griffin for District 8 and Ezra Roberts for District 11.
Baxter County’s filings also include four other positions, including three for school boards. On the Mountain Home School Board, incumbent Jason Schmeski will run to keep his Position 7 seat, and Mollie Morgan has filed for Position 5. Russell Duggins has filed for the Position 4 seat on the Cotter School Board. In addition, Douglas Stephens will run for constable in Baxter County’s District 1.
Marion County had two filings for the quorum court in the Republican Party after the first day on Monday. Incumbent District 7 Justice of the Peace Wesley Shipman will seek reelection. Chuck Van Velkinburgh will run to succeed District 1 JP Michael Scrima, who will not run for another term.
One race has developed on the Fulton County Quorum Court after the first two days of filings. Incumbent District 8 Justice of the Peace Jimmy Marler will be challenged in the Republican primary by Jackie Privett. Other Republican incumbents seeking reelection include Cris Newberry for District 1, Dennis Kinder for District 2, Gary Phillips for District 4, Marjorie A. Rogers for District 6 and Carrie Andrews for District 9. Additional Republican quorum court candidates include John M. Jarman for District 3 and Gary Tanner for District 7. Zach Branscum is running for justice of the peace in District 5 as an independent.
Izard County had four election filings on Monday. Incumbent District 4 Justice of the Peace Willie Moser will seek reelection as an independent, and Gary Michael Morrison Jr. will run for JP in District 7 as a Republican. Current Melbourne School Board President James B. Cooper will seek another term for Position 7, and Andy Miller will run for Position 6 on the board.
Six Republicans have filed for election in Stone County, including two incumbents on the quorum court. Justice of the Peace Jim H. Bullard will seek reelection in District 1, and JP Travis Trammell will run for another term in District 2. Kenny Swafford will run for justice of the peace in District 6, currently held by Seth Templin. The other three candidates will run for constable. John P. Walsh filed for District 4, Bob Cook will run in District 7, and Keenan Glenn filed for District 9.
The filing period continues through Tuesday.
