A Fort Smith man has been charged with aggravated assault for pointing a gun towards another driver in Boone County. According to the probable cause affidavit, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a man who stated a driver had passed him while pointing a gun towards him. With the assistance of the Arkansas State Police and Harrison Police Department, the offending vehicle was pulled over near the Bela Vista/Capps intersection. Authorities confiscated two handguns from the driver, identified as 31-year-old Grayson Cauley of Fort Smith. The victim arrived at the Sheriff’s Office to fill out a written statement where he reported as he was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 65 North from Hollister when a blue Chevy Malibu pulled up next to him. Cauley had rolled down the window and waved a handgun at him. The victim stated he didn’t understand what was going on at the time and just shook his head. He stated Cauley swerved into the right hand lane as if he was attempting to hit his vehicle while pointing the handgun towards his head. The victim stated he sped up to try to get away from Cauley, but noticed he was being followed. When both drivers arrived in Harrison, Cauley pulled into the Game Stop parking lot to turn around to drive back north.

During an interview, Cauley told authorities he had never seen the victims car, however he had pulled out his gun while he was at the stop light near Hollister to show his friend who was in a car next to him. Officers asked Cauley to call his friend to verify his statement. During the call, Cauley’s friend stated Cauley had pulled out his gun at the stop light and waved it around “being silly” like the guys in the movies.

After several minutes, Cauley stated everything he had just told the officers was a lie. Cauley said the victim had “flipped him off” so he rolled down his window, waved the gun and pointed it at the victim.

Cauley has been charged with one felony count of aggravated assault. He was released from the Boone County Detention Center on $10,000 bond.
