Since its founding in 2010, an area children’s advocacy center has served as a safe place for child abuse victims and their families in portions of north central and northwest Arkansas. Grandma’s House serves Baxter, Marion, Searcy, Boone, Newton, Carroll and Madison counties.

Grandma’s House Community Development Coordinator Kaleigh Soma will be a guest on an upcoming episode of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and she says one of the center’s main responsibilities is to facilitate investigations into child abuse allegations with law enforcement and the Arkansas Department of Human Services’ Division of Children and Family Services.

The original location for Grandma’s House is 501 West Stephenson Avenue in Harrison. More locations have been added since then, including one at 914 South Main Street in Mountain Home, as the need to expand has been evident. The center’s statistics show out of the 363 children it tended to, nearly 20% of those children were from Baxter County alone. Grandma’s House has two other locations in Berryville and Huntsville.

Soma describes what children and their non-offending caregivers may experience when going to one of the four Grandma’s House locations.

Grandma’s House is funded through grants from the state of Arkansas and donations from the public. Soma says the local 501(c)(3) will also take the opportunity to have one of its representatives speak to a group.
