
There was plenty of high school basketball on Wednesday as regional tournaments began in Arkansas.
Four area teams played their openers in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at West Side High School in Greers Ferry.
Norfork’s girls invoked the mercy rule on their way to clinching another state tournament bid. The Lady Panthers routed Maynard 71-26.
Viola watched its season come to an end in the other girls’ game as they fell to Mammoth Spring 74-22. Brynn Washam led the Lady Bears with 21 points, Tay Davis scored 13, and Adrianna Corbett added 12.
Viola suffered the same fate on the boys’ side of the tournament. The Longhorns were doubled up by Marked Tree 74-37.
The Salem girls will be going back to the state tournament after winning their first game in the Class 3A Region 2 Tournament at Manila. The defending state champion Lady Greyhounds put the mercy rule in effect as they pounded Piggott 69-36.
Three area teams competed on the opening night of the Class 2A Central Regional Tournament at Izard County High School in Brockwell.
The host Lady Cougars were able to secure a state tournament berth. Izard County breezed past the 2A-5 district champions from Bigelow with a 56-31 decision.
Izard County had a different result on the boys’ bracket. The Cougars’ season came to an end as they lost to Bigelow 63-58.
Marshall’s boys will be making a return to the state tournament after a successful regional opener. The Bobcats eliminated Conway Christian 67-54.
Three area teams played their first games in the Class 1A Region 1 Tournament at Huntsville.
The Lead Hill boys were one and done in the tournament. The Tigers fell to the New School by a final of 78-21.
The other boys’ game ended with Jasper clinching a state tournament bid. The Pirates picked up an easy 79-54 win over Mulberry.
Omaha’s girls will also be advancing to the state tournament of which they’ll be the designated host. The Lady Eagles topped Thaden 56-37.
Valley Springs had mixed results on the opening night of the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament at Booneville.
The Valley Springs girls will be guaranteed a state tournament berth. In a battle between Lady Tigers, Valley Springs defeated Charleston 50-29.
Valley Springs did not fare as well on the boys’ side. The Tigers’ season ended as they were edged out by Hackett 55-53.
Ozark Mountain’s girls lost the opening game of the Class 2A West Regional Tournament at Greenland. The Lady Bears fell to Lavaca 60-55.
In Missouri, two area girls’ teams competed in the semifinals of the Class 2, District 10 Tournament at Mansfield.
Bakersfield was able advance to Friday’s championship game as they pulled off the upset over top-seeded Hartville by a score of 48-35. The Lady Lions improve to 17-9 on the season.
Bakersfield’s last opponent in the tournament will be Norwood. Gainesville ended up losing the second semifinal game to the Lady Pirates 51-21. The Lady Bulldogs end their season at 17-9.
