
There was plenty of high school baseball and softball on Thursday as regional tournaments began in Arkansas.
Two local baseball teams played the opening games of the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at Marked Tree. Norfork was able to clinch a state tournament bid after shutting out Crowley’s Ridge Academy. Viola watched its season come to an end in the next game as they were edged out by Armorel 3-2.
Two area baseball teams were one and done in the Class 2A West Regional Tournament at Lavaca. Cotter came up just short as they fell to Mountainburg 2-1, and Marshall lost to Mansfield 10-0.
Two other area baseball teams lost their openers in the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament at the Equity Bank Sports Complex in Harrison. Flippin was defeated by Charleston 6-2, and Valley Springs fell to Paris 8-3.
Izard County was eliminated from the Class 2A Central Regional Baseball Tournament at South Side-Bee Branch. The Cougars were doubled up by Bigelow 6-3.
Melbourne’s baseball season ended in the opening round of the Class 3A Region 2 Tournament at Rivercrest High School in Wilson. The Bearkatz lost to Harrisburg 5-4.
Three area baseball teams began action in the Class 1A Region 1 Tournament at the Equity Bank Sports Complex. Lead Hill’s year ended with a 16-0 loss to County Line, and Omaha also exited the tournament after falling to Ozark Catholic 12-2. Jasper secured a state tournament berth by topping Mulberry 15-7.
In other baseball, Bakersfield beat Mountain View-Liberty 7-4.
Three area schools took part in the opening day of the Class 2A West Regional Softball Tournament at Lavaca. Cotter is guaranteed a spot in next week’s state tournament after blanking Hector 10-0. Yellville-Summit’s season ended with an 8-0 loss to Mansfield, and Marshall was also bounced from the tournament as they fell to Magazine 6-5.
Two area softball teams competed on the first day of the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament at Harrison. Flippin’s season ended at the hands of Booneville with a 17-2 decision. Valley Springs will go to the state tournament next week after shutting out another group of Lady Tigers from Charleston by a final of 9-0.
Two other area softball teams played their openers in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at Marked Tree. Viola’s season will continue into next week after they routed Hillcrest 15-4. Mammoth Spring was not as fortunate as they lost to Shirley 13-1.
Two area softball teams were victorious in the first round of the Class 3A Region 2 Tournament at Rivercrest. Salem got past Corning 9-6. Melbourne invoked the mercy rule in the fifth inning as they blanked Harrisburg 10-0.
Izard County’s softball season ended in the Class 2A Central Regional Tournament at South Side-Bee Branch. The Lady Cougars were edged out by Bigelow 1-0.
