The Mountain Home City Council approved two personnel policy updates during its regular meeting Thursday night. Both were put through all three readings and passed with emergency clauses meaning they go into effect immediately.

The first policy passed makes the city a drug-free work place for all non-commercial driver’s license employees. It also repeals previous drug-free work place ordinances.

The policy comes from the municipal league and addresses medical marijuana and identifies who can be drug tested.

The other ordinance the council passed concerned sick leave and banked hours.

The council voted down a resolution from councilwoman Paige Evans who proposed the city fund its own appraisal on any real estate property to be purchased by the city.

The proposal was voted down 4-2 with Evans and Jim Bodenhamer voting in favor. Voting against were Bob Van Haaren, Susan Stockton, Jennifer Baker and Wayne Almond. Carry Manuel and Nick Reed were absent.

The council also heard an update from Mayor Hillrey Adams and Police Chief Eddie Griffin about the School Resource Officer program. The city currently has officers in each of the seven schools in the Mountain Home School District with the price of the service split 50/50 between the school district and the city.

School officials recently met with Chief Griffin to let him know, due to budget constraints in the coming school year, they may have trouble funding their half. They are working on a grant to help with their half.

Adams and Griffin wanted to make the council aware of the situation in case the city needs to help make up some of the deficit.
