Two sixth-grade students from Cotter Elementary School have earned first and second place in a state-wide essay contest for Project Prevent, a youth tobacco prevention coalition in Arkansas. Porter Bramblett took first place, and Nide Raycraft placed second in a competition with 513 applicants. Project Prevent representatives awarded the students certificates and prizes at a presentation on Monday.

KTLO’s Sammy Raycraft caught up with the students, as well as elementary counselor Beth Foster, after the presentation and Bramblett says his essay had a personal story.

The Cotter School group is student led and has participated in many activities this school year. Beginning in September 2023 they had a booth and exhibits at Cotter School’s annual Family Fun Health Night. In October they went to Jonesboro for a fall conference to learn more strategies about how to stay away from vaping. They created yard signs for Red Ribbon Week, and they also had a booth and exhibit at the Cotter Fall Festival. In November they created art using sidewalk chalk for the Great American Smokeout Day. They also presented information about Project Prevent to 1st and 2nd graders. Throughout the year they have monthly meetings to work on projects, learn strategies, and answer questions about vaping.
