Marshall High School’s eight-man football program will have new but familiar leadership when they hit the gridiron this fall. The Searcy County School Board decided to hire from within earlier this year when they promoted assistant coach Cody Cassell to the position of head coach.

Cassell says he was excited when he was told he would take the reins as the Bobcats’ new leader.

The Searcy County School District has been Cassell’s only employer since he got into coaching. He just finished his third year as an assistant coach at Marshall.

Cassell has assumed the leadership position for the Bobcats since January after his predecessor, Darin Dunnagan, was let go, but the school board made it official in February. Cassell says it will make his job easier knowing he and his players are already familiar with each other.

There are two divisions of eight-man football in Arkansas. Schools in Classes 1A and 2A play in the sanctioned division, and those in Classes 3A and 4A are in the unsanctioned or club division. Marshall plays in the unsanctioned division, which has fewer schools, and Cassell says putting together a schedule has been a challenge.

The Bobcats will first take the field during the benefit week when they travel to Rose Bud on Aug. 23.
