
As the new school year is draws closer to the start, one area high school is making an addition to its athletic department. This fall will be the inaugural season for Viola’s new volleyball program.
Viola athletic director Jason Hughes will serve as the Lady Longhorns’ first head coach in addition to being in the same position for the girls’ basketball, softball and golf teams. Hughes says the idea of starting volleyball came nearly a year ago.

This season will be a new challenge for Hughes. He says it’s the first time he has been a head volleyball coach on any level.

Hughes recently spoke with officials at the Arkansas Activities Association about the best way to get the program started. He says as a result, Viola will not have any conference affiliation for its first two seasons.

The Lady Longhorns will play their season opener on Aug. 22 when they travel to Brockwell to meet Izard County.
