U.S. Forest Service to sponsor free fishing derbies in September

The U.S. Forest Service, in collaboration with state and local partners, will be sponsoring free fishing derbies in September.

The first derby, for children 15 and under with adult supervision, will take place on September 7 at Deer Pond in Deer. Registration begins in the morning at 8:30 and the event runs from 9:00 to 11:00.

The derby will be held in partnership with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC), National Wild Turkey Federation and other local businesses and partners.

The second derby, for ages four to 13, will take place on September 14 at Mirror Lake in the Blanchard Springs Recreation Area in Fifty-six. Registration begins in the morning at 8, with the event running from 9 to 11. Awards will be presented at noon.

The event will be held in partnership with AGFC, Riders United 4 Children, Stone County Conservation District as well as other local businesses and partners.

Participants are limited to one pole and three trout. Some trout bait will be available but kids can bring their own. Awards will be given for largest trout in three age groups, four to six, seven to nine and ten to 13. Restrooms will be available.
