Yellville-Summit among Friday’s season-opening winners

The Yellville-Summit High School football team was victorious in its first game under new head coach Chaseton McCarthy. The Panthers played in the first ever 11-man game at Izard County High School in Brockwell and defeated the Cougars 55-7. Yellville-Summit is 1-0 on the season, and their next game will be in two weeks when they travel to Hector. Izard County starts at 0-1, and they’ll head to Cave City next week.

Salem came away with a hard-fought win in front of the home crowd. The Greyhounds squeaked by Pocahontas by a final of 30-28. Salem starts the year at 1-0, and they’ll meet Prescott Thursday on the campus of Hendrix College in Conway.

Melbourne went on the road and dominated as they were able to put the mercy rule in effect. The Bearkatz routed Hoxie with a 49-13 decision. Melbourne is now 1-0 on the year, and they’ll have their home opener next week against Bald Knob.

Mountain View came up just short in its return to 11-man football. The Yellowjackets suffered a 14-9 defeat at the hands of Cave City. Mountain View drops to 0-1, and they’ll make the trip to Berryville next Friday.

Harrison’s season opener at Branson was suspended at halftime due to the weather. The Goblins were up on the Pirates 7-3. The game is scheduled to resume Saturday evening at 6.

On the eight-man level, Marshall’s season opener was incredibly lopsided. The Bobcats were able to shut out Guy-Perkins 82-0. Marshall begins the year at 1-0, and they’ll remain at home next week when they play Cedar Ridge.
