Baxter County sheriff addresses back-to-school safety, status of prison overcrowding

Local law-enforcement personnel have had a fairly busy period over the last month. Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery was a recent guest on KTLO-FM to discuss some of the latest updates at his office.

Sheriff Montgomery says one thing that became a priority in August was back-to-school safety.

It’s not just the return of students to classes that has the deputies busy. The sheriff says they’ve been pulling extra duty for the National Safety Institute.

During his visit, Sheriff Montgomery also addressed the state’s plan to have a 3,000-square-foot prison facility constructed to alleviate inmate overcrowding. On several occasions, the Arkansas Department of Corrections has had to keep inmates in county jails and detention centers. The Baxter County Detention Center is one of just a very few that is currently not overcrowded, and Montgomery says he believes there are two reasons for that.

The sheriff added his office went through a typical Labor Day holiday period. They reportedly had several calls and two injuries reported from a skiing accident and a fall.
