The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) is warning the public of a phone scam circulating the past month.
In each reported case of the scam, an individual associated with someone involved in a motor vehicle crash was contacted by a scammer who claimed to be an investigating trooper. Scammers attempted to solicit money from the individuals and have been known to intimidate the victims with false claims of impending or nonexistent court charges or proceedings.
MSHP employees will not call to solicit funds or demand any form of payment. Patrol employees do not process bonds or accept money to prevent or dispose of charges.
MSHP warns anyone to assume a call asking to send money is a scam. MSHP recommends taking time to verify the information given in a call by calling numbers on verified websites. Do not confirm any identifying information to a scammer.
Scam calls should be reported to local Troop Headquarters. For more information, call 573-526-6122.
