A Missouri man currently residing in the Baxter County Detention Center is facing additional charges after allegedly assaulting other inmates. Thirty-eight-year-old Cody Hastings of Republic is expected to be charged with three counts of third-degree battery and one count of impairing the operations of a vital public facility.
According to the incident report, a Baxter County jailer came across the radio Oct. 1 and stated someone was being rolled out. Another jailer responded and was told by an inmate he needed to get out of there. A second inmate came to the jailer and claimed Hastings needed to leave the pod due to him causing issues and striking two other individuals. The first inmate confirmed to the jailer he was struck by Hastings.
The jailer reviewed camera footage and observed Hastings allegedly talking to the victim in an aggressive manner and striking him in the face with his right fist. The victim stated he wanted to press charges.
Another issue was soon reported in the same pod. Jailers responded, and one pointed a taser at Hastings. The jailers then told him he would be moving to another area of the detention center. Video footage showed Hastings approaching the second inmate and attempting to hit him, but the inmate blocked Hastings, who then fell to the ground.
Hastings had appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court last month and pled not guilty to charges of aggravated assault on a family or household member, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct on accusations of attacking his ex-girlfriend. Circuit Judge John Putman lowered Hastings’ bond during court from $25,000 to $15,000.
Following the new charges, Hastings’ bond has been increased to $31,500.
