Cotter among volleyball teams winning regional tournament openers

There was plenty of high school volleyball on Tuesday as regional tournament play began in Arkansas, and district play got underway in Missouri.

Three area teams played on the opening day of the Class 2A East Regional Tournament at Izard County High School in Brockwell.
Cotter secured a state tournament bid in the last match of the night. The Lady Warriors defeated Palestine-Wheatley in straight sets with scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-10. Cotter improves to 15-4 on the season.
Izard County also punched their ticket to Hackett next week with a straight set win. The host Lady Cougars topped Marianna 25-9, 25-9 and 25-15. Izard County is now 10-6 on the year.
Marshall will join Cotter and Izard County in next week’s state tournament as well. The Lady Bobcats began the regional tournament by beating Barton in straight sets with scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-22. Marshall remains unbeaten in 15 matches on the season.

Four area teams began action in the Class 3A East Regional Tournament at Hoxie.
Flippin watched its season come to end with a straight set defeat. Crowley’s Ridge Academy defeated the Lady Bobcats 25-16, 25-13 and 25-8. Flippin’s final record is 8-10.
Salem was also one and done in the tournament. The Lady Greyhounds fell in straight sets as Manila posted scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-18. Salem concludes its year at 15-6.
Bergman was bounced from the tournament in straight sets. Harrisburg defeated the Lady Panthers with scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-10. Bergman finishes the season at 12-11.
Valley Springs clinched a state tournament berth with a four-set win. The Lady Tigers beat Hoxie with scores of 20-25, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18. Valley Springs’ record improves to 20-5.

Two area teams were in Eminence for the start of the Class 1, District 7 Tournament.
Bakersfield was eliminated in the first match of evening in four sets. Couch topped the Lady Lions with scores of 17-25, 25-12, 25-11 and 25-19. Bakersfield’s season ends with a mark of 12-16.
Dora’s season also came to an end. The Lady Falcons fell in straight sets as Summersville posted scores of 25-8, 25-4 and 25-11. Dora’s final record is 8-18-2.

Gainesville was bounced from the opening round of the Class 2, District 9 Tournament at Fordland. Thayer beat the Lady Bulldogs in straight sets with scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-13. Gainesville finishes the year at 9-14.

West Plains had a successful opening night in the Class 4, District 1 Tournament at Farmington. The top-seeded Lady Zizzers defeated North County in straight sets with scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-16. West Plains is now 26-11 on the season, and they’ll meet Hillsboro in the semifinals on Saturday.

Two area teams took part in the first night of the Class 3, District 11 Tournament at Houston.
Forsyth’s season ended in a match that needed all five sets. The host Lady Tigers topped the Lady Panthers with scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 20-25 and 15-11. Forsyth wraps up the year at 5-23-4.
Ava was also eliminated from the first round in straight sets. In a battle between Lady Bears, Willow Springs came out on top with scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-12. Ava’s season concludes at 6-21-3.

Branson saw its season end in the first round of the Class 5, District 6 Tournament at Willard. The Lady Pirates fell in straight sets as top-seeded Ozark posted scores of 25-14, 25-7 and 25-11. Branson’s final record is 15-9-4.
