The Mountain Home High School football team’s first postseason home game in 16 years was a high-scoring affair that ended in an exciting fashion. A fake punt was able to seal the 57-50 victory for the Bombers over Sheridan in the opening round of the Class 6A State Playoffs.
It only took about a minute-and-a-half for Mountain Home to get the first score after Barrett Miller faked the handoff and ran it in from 28 yards out, but the Yellowjackets responded in even less time as the next drive ended with a 32-yard touchdown run by Zay Stephens. The Bombers kept the lead as Sheridan’s two-point attempt failed, and they extended it nearly five minutes into the game as Jacob Chenowith had a two-yard carry for the next score. They added to their advantage nearly two minutes into the second quarter with a one-yard run by Miller. Sheridan was able to put two more touchdowns on the board before the end of the half, and Mountain Home went into the locker room up seven.
The Yellowjackets cut the margin to one as the opening drive of the second half ended with a 51-yard pass play from Dax McMellon to JP Black. The Bombers responded with back-to-back touchdown runs from Chenowith, but a couple of turnovers later in the game looked to be costly as Sheridan went on a run of 23 straight points and went up by eight. Mountain Home would tie the game back up after Chenowith ran it in from two yards out and added the two-point conversion with just under six minutes left. The Bombers got the ball back after the Yellowjackets gave up it on downs, and Chenowith put Mountain Home back on top with less than four minutes left on a 32-yard run. He was also big on defense as he came up with an interception with just over two minutes left. With 26 seconds left on the clock and no timeouts left for Sheridan, the Bombers lined up to punt, but…
Listen:
That direct snap to Nathan Yarborough gave Mountain Home the first down and allowed them to run the final seconds off the clock.
Chenowith finished with 32 carries for 223 yards and five touchdowns. As a team, the Bombers ended up with 50 rush attempts for 313 yards.
The Yellowjackets wrap up their season with a record of 3-8. Mountain Home improves to 9-2, and they’ll be at War Memorial Stadium next week for their quarterfinal game against Little Rock Catholic.
