Viola girls, Calico Rock boys win openers in Battle of the Border Tournament at Mammoth Spring

Two area high school basketball teams won their openers in Battle of the Border Tournament Monday at Mammoth Spring.
Viola’s girls defeated Couch, Mo., 47-40. Taylor Richardson led the Lady Longhorns with 22 points and was 12 of 15 from the free throw line, Cheyenne Newberry scored 13, and Marissa Hutson added 11. Viola improves to 9-6 on the season, and they’ll face Mammoth Spring in the semifinals on Thursday.
The Calico Rock boys also advanced to the semifinals. The Pirates breezed past Couch by a final of 78-54.

The Izard County Invitational Basketball Tournament continued at Melbourne. In the senior girls’ game, the host Lady Bearkatz invoked the mercy rule as they routed Cave City 65-29. Izard County’s senior boys were edged out by Cave City 56-54. Izard County fared better in the junior girls’ contest as they topped Highland 37-20. The Izard County junior boys were defeated by Melbourne 39-27.

Mountain View had mixed results on the opening night of the Mark Martin Automotive/Lyon College High School Basketball Tournament at Batesville. The Lady Yellowjackets pounded Southside Batesville 71-42. Mountain View did not fare as well on the boys’ side as they fell to Cedar Ridge 56-41.

Bergman’s boys were able dominate their opener in the Green Forest Holiday Tournament. The Panthers put the mercy rule in effect as they destroyed Huntsville 77-46.
