During a special meeting Monday night, the Mountain Home City Council approved the purchase of new water meters to replace old ones that have been failing due to dying batteries.

The council approved a resolution to waive competitive bidding and purchase the new meters from Consolidated Pipe & Supply of Little Rock for $122,400.

Public Works Director Steve Hill told the council batteries on the current meters have been dying and that means they are not sending the signal to the water department with the meter readings. When the battery dies, they are also unable to get the meter reading manually. Hill says the 10-year warranty on the current meters expired in September. He told the council with this type of equipment, they would expect 10-15% of it to have problems, but they are over 50% and are near 100% with the 1 1/2″ meters.

The city is purchasing a new brand of meters which are cheaper and will arrive quicker to replace the malfunctioning meters. For the remaining meters, they plan on buying rebuild kits which will come with a 10-year warranty.

In the only other item of business, the council voted to name Bailey Bodenhamer to the City of Mountain Home’s Planning & Zoning Commission. He replaces Phillip Frame who resigned after being elected to the city council in November.
