With extreme winter weather behind us, the National Weather Service (NWS) is now turning its focus to weather conditions associated with the spring and summer months. March 2-8 has been designated as Arkansas’ Severe Weather Awareness Week, an annual event aimed at increasing public awareness of severe weather dangers and encouraging preparedness.

Throughout the week, NWS offices across the state will highlight different aspects of thunderstorm hazards, with each day dedicated to a specific topic.

The event kicks off Sunday, March 2, with an introduction, followed by discussions on flooding Monday, lightning Tuesday, tornadoes Wednesday, severe thunderstorms Thursday, and watches and warnings Friday. The week concludes Saturday with a focus on storm reports.

Dennis Cavanaugh, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist from the NWS in Little Rock, says “We are excited to bring back Arkansas’ Severe Weather Awareness Week for the 2025 season. Our goal is to educate and inform the public about the dangers of severe weather and to encourage them to take the necessary steps to prepare and protect themselves and their property before the upcoming peak severe weather season.”

NWS will be providing daily updates and tips on their website and social media channels throughout the week.
