Melbourne baseball team wins district semifinal game, Flippin gets rained out

The 3A-2 District Baseball Tournament began its semifinal round on Wednesday. Melbourne was able to advance to the championship game with an 11-1 win over Valley Springs. Flippin’s game with the host Cavemen was rained out and will be made up Thursday.

Izard County’s baseball team won its semifinal game in the 2A-2 District Tournament at Sloan-Hendrix High School in Imboden. The Cougars doubled up the host Greyhounds by a final of 6-3.

The semifinals of the 3A-2 District Softball Tournament were also held at Cave City. Yellville-Summit suffered a 6-0 loss to Melbourne in the late game. The opener ended with Salem topping Mountain View 9-5.

The 1A-2 District Softball Tournament got underway at Viola. The host Lady Longhorns invoked the mercy rule in the fifth inning as they routed Shirley 14-4. Calico Rock was edged out by Greers Ferry West Side by a score of 14-13.

An RBI single by Willow Warden in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as Izard County squeaked by the host Lady Greyhounds 5-4. Quinn Johnson picked up the win in relief as she pitched 2 1/3 no-hit innings and struck out three batters. Megan McBride started the game in the circle, pitched 4 2/3 innings, recorded seven strikeouts and gave up three hits and four runs. McBride led the Lady Cougar offense with two hits and two RBIs, Warden provided two hits and drove in a run, Quinn Johnson and Reese Johnson each finished with two hits, Hollie Johnson and Kallie Skidmore each had a hit and an RBI, and Addysyn Kenion added a base hit. Izard County improves to 15-6 on the season.
The day began with Marshall losing the first semifinal to Tuckerman 16-1.
