When it comes to dealing with the issue of alcoholism, several organizations deal with the individual having the drinking problem. Al-Anon operates under the belief that alcoholism is a family illness, and by changing attitudes, family members can lead happier, more serene lives.

Al-Anon’s local public service outreach coordinator named Darlene will be a guest on an upcoming episode of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and she says one of the biggest misconceptions about the organization is that it’s a way to get those with a drinking problem to stop.

Al-Anon has regular family group meetings Monday evenings at 7 at Bull Shoals Presbyterian Church on Walnut Avenue, and this June will mark the 50th anniversary of the organization’s meetings in Bull Shoals. There’s also a men’s meeting Friday evenings at 6 at the Twin Lakes Fellowship Club on McClure Lane in Mountain Home.

Darlene says those with families and friends wishing to see them stop drinking are welcome to attend.

Al-Anon is not affiliated with any religion, institution or political movement. It is self-supported through voluntary contributions, and there are no dues or fees for anyone to attend.

A special family event will be held at the end of this month. The Al-Anon District 7 Fun, Food and Fellowship Day is scheduled for May 31 from 10:30 to 3:30 at the Christian Church of Mountain Home on East Side Court. Darlene says the event is available for all ages.
