A Marion County man has been arrested on an attempted murder charge and two other felonies following an incident in northern Marion County Tuesday when a good Samaritan stopped to check on him. Seventy-five-year-old Jimmy R. Jones of Peel is being held in the Marion County Law Enforcement Center.
According to Marion County Sheriff Gregg Alexander, Jones was parked on Marion County Road 8042 when the victim stopped to check on him. The victim says when she asked Jones, who was standing outside of his vehicle, if he was OK, he pointed a gun at her. The victim got inside of her car, and as she was leaving, she heard at least two gunshots as she drove away. She says Jones got into his vehicle and followed her for a short distance before turning onto another road.
Deputies responded and processed the scene before they had to leave to respond to a vehicle accident on County Road 3530. There, they found a vehicle belonging to Jones and recovered a firearm, but Jones was not there.
During an interview with deputies, the victim was able to indentify Jones as the person who fired the shots at her and the vehicle he was driving.
Jones was arrested Thursday and is facing felony charges of criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder, second-degree discharging a firearm from a vehicle and possession of firearms by certain persons (meaning he is a convicted felon), all felonies. Jones is being held in the Marion County Law Enforcement Center on $50,000 bond.
Jones has two previous felony arrests in Marion County, one in 2020 and the other in 2021.
In the 2020 case he was charged with criminal impersonation, terroristic threatening, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
In the 2021 case Jones was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threatening and disorderly conduct.
In March of 2024, Jones was found unfit to stand trial, and both cases were nolle prossed. Jones was ordered to be remanded into the custody of the Arkansas Department of Human Services. The court ordered Jones to be transported to the Veteran’s Hospital in Little Rock for medical treatment at that time.
