One of two people arrested for manipulating the self-service checkout system at Walmart and leaving the store with unpaid for merchandise appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court May 12.

Forty-eight-year-old Shane Christiansen of Mountain Home and Natalie Alvirez were accused of using the “skip scan” method at a self-service checkout stand.

Christiansen was sentenced to three years-probation.

Skip scanning involves not scanning all of the items in an order. In a recent example of skip-scanning, more than $700 in merchandise only showed as being worth less than $10 on the receipt.

Walmart asset protection staff reported to Mountain Home Police on July 1 last year saying they had pulled information together showing Christiansen and Alvirez had skip scanned a total of 24 occasions.

Christiansen was involved in 17 events and Alvirez in 7. The value of the items Christiansen is alleged to have stolen amounted to almost $2,100.

During one visit, Christiansen is alleged to have skip-scanned items and Alvirez paid for items that had been legitimately scanned with her own debit card.

Christiansen’s attorney, Justin Downum, told the court that he already had the total amount of victim restitution assessed in the case in his trust account.
