The rite of passage for many growing up was spending hours upon hours in the saddle of a bicycle exploring and waiting until dark to come home. In a time where less kids spend the same time on two wheels and more in front of digital distractions, one local organization is giving kids a safe, challenging opportunity to experience the thrill of riding.
The Mountain Home Cutthroats is a youth mountain biking team led by Coach Brandon Cooper. The team is part of the Arkansas NICA League (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) and has been active for about nine years. Focusing on students in grades 6 through 12, its goal is to develop youth through cycling.
Coach Cooper says thinking back to his own childhood prompted him to build the team.
Listen:
The team trains on local trails including at Pigeon Creek, Clysta Willet Park, and the new Oak Ridge Mountain Bike Trails at the Bull Shoals- White River State Park. The coach thinks roadways are far more crowded than they used to be so taking the rides off road can provide new challenges and a safer environment for the students.
Listen:
The group doesn’t want equipment to be a hindering for a student to get involved so they keep a stock of loaner bikes ready to go for the riders who may not have access to a bike for the trails.
Coach Cooper has had many memorable experiences over the years teaching the kids but one sticks out the most.
