The Buffalo National River will be the focus of a community cleanup effort later this month to remove trash and waste from the local waterway.

Buffalo National River Partners (BNRP) is organizing a cleanup along the middle section of the river on July 10, targeting the 5.5-mile stretch from Tyler Bend to Gilbert. The event runs from 9 to 3, with volunteers scheduled to meet up at the Tyler Bend Pavilion.

BNRP board member, Landon Curtis, says these periodic clean ups along the river have been going on for over twenty years and helped form the basis for the organization.

The heavy spring rains have caused the river and its tributaries to have excess runoff which means more chances for wash out from local farms, properties and visitors to the area. More volunteers are always needed to help the effort and Curtis says participants can help with heavy work or the lighter side of trash removal.

Buffalo River Outfitters will provide a limited number of canoes for the effort, available on a first come, first served basis. Participants are encouraged to bring their own canoe or kayak if possible, along with a lunch, water, and any tools that may help with river or shoreline cleanup.

Organizers like Curtis say the effort is part of an ongoing commitment to preserve the natural beauty and health of the river, which draws thousands of visitors annually and plays a key role in tourism and local recreation. For North Arkansas native the Buffalo has always been a part of his life and protecting his favorite place will always be a top priority.
