A local man facing a number of charges in open criminal cases appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court/Criminal Division Monday.

Forty-four-year-old Joseph David Young pled guilty to the charges against him and was sentenced to five years in prison.

The latest arrest for Young, who lists an address in Mountain Home, came November 22 last year.

He was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement or corrections officer, possession of drugs and paraphernalia used to ingest drugs, fleeing on foot, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental operations.

The arrest stems from a traffic stop due to the vehicle in which he was a passenger not having a license plate.

Initially, Young gave officers a fictitious name.

When one of the officers on scene told Young to put his hands on a vehicle, he seemed to be obeying, but then was reported to have spun around and attempted to run away.

An officer was able to grab Young’s shirt and left arm. A tussle ensued. At one point, Young is alleged to have kicked one of the lawmen three times.

A taser was used on Young four times. Officers were not able to get complete control of Young until the fourth and final discharge.

After Young was subdued, a search was begun and drugs, including suspected methamphetamine and marijuana, along with a glass smoking pipe were located.

The female driver was ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt and released along with her vehicle. She had provided officers a bill of sale for the truck and indicated it was registered but she could not get a license plate for it because of a fine she was required to pay first.

REVOCATION SOUGHT

Young’s probation handed down in a 2022 case was also revoked and he was sentenced to five years in prison. The sentence will be served concurrently with the prison time Young got in the 2024 case.

In the 2022 case, Young was accused of not returning a 2011 Hyundai Sonata pickup truck he had been allowed to drive to his work site because his vehicle had broken down.

According to the probable cause affidavit, an incident occurred at work that resulted in Young being fired. The truck was not returned.

The owner said he had made several unsuccessful attempts to get Young to bring the vehicle back but he was not able to locate Young and Young was not answering calls.

The victim told law enforcement he had located the vehicle at an address along State Highway 5 North, but he had to leave it there until he could get someone to drive it away.

When he returned, the owner reported the vehicle was missing. It was then reported as stolen.

On June 1, 2022, two Baxter County sheriff’s deputies saw the vehicle drive by, activated emergency lights and made a stop.

Young claimed he had taken the vehicle “to get it fixed” but denied stealing it.

When the vehicle was searched, officers located marijuana and marijuana wax. A beer can was also reported to be sitting in a cupholder. Young said he had just opened the beer before being pulled over.
