With just under a month remaining until Cross Country, Golf, Football, and all fall sports kickoff, one thing remains a big obstacle in the preseason training for these outdoor sports: The Sun.
In 2019 the Arkansas Activities Association approved the Wet Bulb Globe Thermometer (WBGT) as the measurement device for measuring acceptable heat/humidity levels for practices. The WBGT takes into account ambient temperature, relative humidity, wind, and solar radiation from the sun to get a measure that can be used to monitor environmental conditions during outdoor activity. The WBGT can affect the scheduling of practices, ratio of workout time, and determine whether outdoor activity should be terminated or delayed.
Mountain Home athletic trainer Callie Hendricks explains what exactly happens if the WBGT number is too high and how it effects outdoor sports.
