Five inmates at the Monroe County Detention Center have been charged in the death of a fellow detainee earlier this month, Arkansas State Police said Tuesday.

Special Agents with the State Police Criminal Investigation Division arrested Gregory Otis, 38; Typaris Johnson, 26; Antonio Aldridge, 31; Reko Branscomb, 28; and Carmello Hawkins, 18, on Aug. 12. Each faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree battery and engaging in violent criminal group activity. They remain in custody on $3 million bond, with a court appearance set for Aug. 19.

The charges stem from an Aug. 8 incident in which detention staff found 44-year-old Terry Craig of Clarendon injured in his cell shortly after being booked on child sexual abuse material and firearm possession charges. Craig was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center in Stuttgart, where he was pronounced dead just before 10 p.m.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office requested State Police assistance, and Craig’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine the cause and manner of death.
