An Ava man has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing discovered early Friday morning in Douglas County.
Court records show 54-year-old Aaron Vaughan has been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and resisting arrest after officers found a body in his home on Aug. 15.
According to a probable cause statement, an Ava Police officer was dispatched around 1:30 in the morning to the 400 block of Bunch Avenue for a possible homicide. When officers entered the residence, they observed blood in the garage and on a stairway leading to the basement. A man’s body with multiple stab wounds was found on a couch in Vaughan’s bedroom.
The victim was identified as 48-year-old Dale Hanson of Springfield.
One of the first responding officers located Vaughan near his vehicle and noted blood on his hands and arms. When the officer attempted to take Vaughan into custody, he resisted but was subdued. At the Douglas County Jail, Vaughan registered a blood alcohol concentration of .169 during a breath test.
In a subsequent interview with Sheriff Chris Degase, Vaughan said he and Hanson had gotten into a fist fight earlier in the evening but claimed it “was never serious.” Vaughan repeatedly denied killing Hanson, telling investigators he suffers from PTSD.
Vaughan is being held in Douglas County pending further court proceedings.
