State Sen. Gary Stubblefield, a longtime Republican lawmaker who represented western Arkansas in the Legislature, has died, according to the state Senate’s information office. He was 74.
Senate spokesperson John Reed confirmed Stubblefield’s death but did not provide a cause. In a Facebook post last week, Stubblefield’s daughter said he had been hospitalized and undergone multiple surgeries, describing his condition as “very critical.”
Stubblefield, of Branch, was first elected to the Arkansas Senate in 2012 and had served since 2013, representing District 26, which covers parts of Franklin, Johnson, Logan and Sebastian counties. He previously served one term in the state House of Representatives.
Before his political career, Stubblefield was a dairy farmer. He attended the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of the Razorbacks football team.
Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
