Donald Trump has ordered all U.S. flags at federal buildings, including those at the Arkansas State Capitol, to be flown at half-staff Friday to honor Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder who was assassinated Wednesday while speaking on the Utah Valley University campus.
Cole Jester, Arkansas Secretary of State, announced the tribute Thursday and urged Arkansans to keep Kirk’s family in their prayers during what he called a time of “intense loss.”
“Charlie Kirk was a father, a husband, and my age,” Jester said. “His young son was born only a few days after my one-year-old daughter. His assassination is an unimaginable tragedy and one that has shaken people around our state. His death will not be in vain. As Americans, we must be free to share our faith and values boldly.”
Kirk, 31, was a prominent national figure in conservative politics and youth activism. He leaves behind his wife and young son.
In his proclamation, Trump wrote: “As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, September 14, 2025.”
