Two personnel from the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission (AGFC) helped save the life of a Great blue herron at Cotter Wednesday after the bird had its beak entangled in fishing line. They were alerted about the situation after photos of the bird were posted on Facebook and contacted by AGFC commissioner Rob Finley of Mountain Home.

Chief of Enforcement Joe Williams and Kent Coffey, a Senior Technician in the Fisheries Division, responded to Cotter Springs and eventually found the bird on the other side of the White River according to Williams.

Williams says the bird also has another injury, but it’s not one they can treat.

The AGFC official says it’s hard to tell how the fishing line got wrapped around the beak of the Great blue heron.

While it’s not unusual for birds to get tangled up in fishing line, Williams says this was one of the worst cases he has seen.

Williams says if anyone ever sees an animal in distress, they can call the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission at 833-345-0325 or 833-356-0824.
