
The Newport community is mourning the loss of School Resource Officer Michael Long, whose death was announced by the Newport Police Department Saturday.
According to the department, Officer Long began his law enforcement career with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in 2014, serving the citizens of Jackson County for eight years before joining the Newport Police Department in 2022. He later became the School Resource Officer for Newport Public Schools.
In a statement released on social media, the Newport Police Department described Long as “more than a law enforcement officer,” calling him a mentor, protector, friend and positive influence to countless young people throughout the community.
Long was charaterized by the department as deeply committed to serving and protecting others, especially the students, faculty and families within the Newport School District.
The department also praised his dedication, compassion and unwavering service, saying his impact on the community “will never be forgotten.”
The Newport Police Department is asking the public to keep Officer Long’s family, friends, coworkers and the Newport Public Schools community in their thoughts and prayers.
