An injured bald eagle found in Jefferson County is recovering after officials discovered the bird had been shot multiple times.
According to Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, a wildlife officer located the eagle after it was unable to fly. The bird was later taken to Raptor Rehab of Central Arkansas for treatment.
Founder Rodney Paul said X-rays revealed six shotgun pellets lodged in the eagle’s body, including pellets in both wings, one leg and the skull.
Paul said none of the eagle’s bones were broken and the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
According to Paul, veterinarians plan to leave the pellets in place because surgery could cause additional tissue damage and extend the bird’s recovery time.
Paul also said he believes the shooting was intentional.
“It was absolutely intentional,” Paul said. “There’s no way it was mistaken for something else.”
Officials noted that shooting a bald eagle is a federal offense and could result in significant fines and penalties.
The Game and Fish Commission continues to investigate the incident while rehabilitation efforts continue.
Paul said the goal is to eventually release the eagle back into Jefferson County once it has recovered.
