The Jacksonville Police Department is investigating after a 6-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday evening.

According to police, officers were called at approximately 7:30 p.m. to the 4000 block of South Highway 161 following reports of shots fired.

While officers were responding, dispatchers advised that someone had been struck by gunfire.

Authorities said officers arrived to find the child inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Two adults were also inside the vehicle but were not injured.

Police said officers immediately began providing aid before the child was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Investigators have not released information on any suspects, but police are searching for a white Hyundai Elantra connected to a person of interest in the case.

In a statement released Monday, the City of Jacksonville said it was “devastated for the loss of life” and extended condolences to the child’s family.

The NAACP also released a statement calling the shooting a “senseless act of gun violence” and urging anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Jacksonville Police Criminal Investigation Division at 501-982-3191.
