The American Red Cross is encouraging residents to schedule blood donation appointments ahead of Memorial Day weekend as hospitals prepare for an increase in summer-related emergencies and accidents.

The Red Cross says maintaining a strong blood supply is especially important during the summer travel season when boating, swimming, camping and highway travel increase the risk of traumatic injuries.

Donors of all blood types are urged to give blood during Trauma Awareness Month to help ensure hospitals have blood products readily available for emergencies.

Those donating through May 31 will receive an oversized Red Cross beach towel while supplies last. Donors who give between June 1 and June 28 will receive a $15 e-gift card and be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of two $7,500 gift cards.

Upcoming blood drives in the Twin Lakes Area and surrounding communities include:

In Mountain Home:

Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church.

Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Baxter County Library.

Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at VFW Ozark Post 3246.
