The Mountain Home Parks and Recreation Department has multiple facilities throughout the city with the goal to keep kids active. One of the busiest facilities, especially during the summer months, is the L.C. Sammons Youth Center, located inside Cooper Park on Spring Street.

Youth center program coordinator Enoch Pepin was a recent guest of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and he says it’s more than just a place for kids to hang out.

The center serves children and families in the area by offering a gym and after-school and summer programs with various activities. The staff encourages kids to exercise with basketball, kickball and dodgeball games or play outdoors in the park. Other popular activities like archery, arts and crafts are also offered.

In addition, the center features gameroom with video games and outlets for personal devices, but Pepin says there have been occasions where the staff have had to shut down the video games to keep a child from becoming too “zombieish.”

The youth center is also available to adults. Pickleball games are offered, and it also hosts adult exercise classes during the week.

For any parent looking to start a year-long membership for a child, Pepin says it comes at a low price.
