An Izard County man has been arrested for allegedly fleeing during a traffic stop.
According to the probable cause affidavit, 52-year-old Shawn W. Patterson has been charged with felony counts of fleeing and endangering the welfare of a minor; and misdemeanor counts of speeding, improper lane change and equipment violation.
On August 26, officers were patrolling an area north of Mount Pleasant when they observed a vehicle with a busted windshield traveling southbound on State Highway 69. Authorities note the vehicle was traveling 64 miles per hour in a 55 zone and crossed the center line. The officer initiated his emergency lights and the vehicle pulled over, and approached the vehicle on the passenger side.
Authorities note the windows were tinted to a point of not being able to see inside, so the driver identified as Patterson, was asked to roll them down for the officers safety.
Patterson allegedly refused to roll down the windows or unlock the door and instead requested a supervisor. The officer requested for Patterson to exit the vehicle to speak with him when Patterson then allegedly put the vehicle in drive and accelerated to speeds up to 86 miles per hour. The officer returned to his patrol car and activated his siren when Patterson continued fleeing southbound through Mount Pleasant allegedly traveling more than 15 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.
Officers note when no traffic was present, a tactical vehicle intervention maneuver was performed and Patterson’s vehicle came to a stop in the northbound ditch of State Highway 69.
Patterson then followed commands to exit the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. Along with Patterson, a front seat passenger and a minor in the back seat exited the vehicle and were detained without incident.
Patterson was then transported to the Izard County Sheriff’s Office without further incident.
