A Marion County man, 62-year-old Charles Bergman of Oakland, has been sentenced to 30 months in one of the state’s Community Correction Centers following a domestic battering incident in June. The same victim was involved in a domestic battering incident with Bergman in 2018.
Bergman’s sentence came earlier this month in Marion County Circuit Court through a negotiated plea.
According to the probable cause affidavit, a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a domestic disturbance along Marion County 142 on the afternoon of June 17. The female resident of the home had fled to a neighbor’s residence for safety.
The deputy was unable to locate Bergman at the victim’s home.
The woman told law enforcement Bergman had been drinking all day and had become violent, grabbed her by the arm and twisted her to the ground. He then allegedly grabbed her by the hair and drug her across the floor.
During the course of the assault, Bergman reportedly tore the house phone from the wall and hid the victim’s cellphone and keys, preventing her from calling for help or leaving in her vehicle.
Afraid for her life, the woman said she ran from her home to a neighbor’s house, where she called the sheriff’s office.
A short while later, dispatch advised the deputy Bergman had been spotted walking down County Road 142.
When Bergman saw the deputy approaching, he fled into the woods. Attempts to locate him were unsuccessful.
During the course of the investigation, it was learned Bergman had a valid protection order in place involving the victim.
In 2018, Bergman was sentenced to six years probation in connection with an incident when he attempted to choke the same victim and threatened to kill her with a metal fork used to roast marshmallows.
