A report commissioned by the Walton Family Foundation was released this past week. The 20-page report was compiled by TNTP, a non-profit organization, formerly known as The New Teacher Project.
TNTP says on its website its “mission is to end the injustice of educational inequality by providing excellent teachers to the students who need them most and by advancing policies and practices that ensure effective teaching in every classroom.”
Among the findings in TNTP’s study — approximately 4% of Arkansas teachers are uncertified, with another 3% teaching out of field.
In many districts, the percentage of uncertified is much higher: as high as 56% in the Helena-West Helena School District, and 52% in the Forrest City School District.
In the report, TNTP provides a roadmap for how to take up this challenge. First, they analyze the geography and extent of Arkansas’ teacher shortage. Next, potential explanations are provided for why the shortage is so high in certain areas, including an analysis of existing efforts to reduce the shortage. Finally, a series of recommendations is provided.
