Two Baxter County inmates are facing additional charges after deputies discovered a broom handle being brandished into a weapon.According to the probable cause affidavit, deputies monitoring the dispatch area observed two inmates, 21-year-old David Peifer and 23-year-old Jonathan Cole, in possession of a long round object.

The object, later identified as a broom handle, was placed in the door and Peifer and Cole were observed twisting it. When deputies went to retrieve the broom handle, Peifer had allegedly hid the broom handle in a trash can. Upon retrieval, deputies observed one end of the broom handle had been fashioned into a “shank” while the two had been twisting it earlier.

Peifer and Cole were charged with impairing the operation of a public facility, possession of weapons by an incarcerated person and criminal mischief. Additional bond amounts of $10,000 were added to both Cole and Peifer.

Cole is currently in the Baxter County Detention Center with aggravated assault, terrorist threatening, endangering the welfare of a minor, as well as an absconded warrant from Probation and parole after he was in a four hour stand off with the Mountain Home Police Department on January 5.

Peifer is facing criminal charges in multiple counties stemming back to 2020. He was recently sentenced to six years in prison, and in one case, was ordered to pay $2,400 in victim restitution.
