The Arkansas State Red Wolves men’s golf opened the NCAA Marana Regional with a record-breaking performance Monday at The Gallery Golf Club in Arizona.

Led by sophomore Cole Kirby, the Red Wolves fired a 7-under-par 281 and sit in fourth place entering the second round.

Kirby carded a career-best 7-under-par 65 and is tied for the individual lead alongside Duke’s William Love.

The 65 set a new Arkansas State program record for lowest round by an individual at an NCAA Regional. The team’s 281 also established a new school record for lowest regional round, breaking the previous mark by three strokes.

Kirby finished the opening round with five birdies and an eagle while posting a bogey-free scorecard.

Thomas Schmidt also turned in a strong performance for Arkansas State, shooting 3-under-par 69 to tie for seventh place individually.

Milan Reed finished at 1-over-par 73, while Jake Lile shot 2-over-par 74. Jake Wallis ended the day at 8-over-par 80.

No. 18 Arizona and No. 5 Oklahoma State share the team lead at 11-under-par, while No. 8 LSU sits third at 9-under.

The top five teams and the top individual not on an advancing team following Wednesday’s final round will move on to the NCAA Championship later this month in California.
