Athletics used a grand slam from Nick Kurtz to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 Wednesday night.
Kurtz delivered the go-ahead grand slam over the glove of center fielder Victor Scott II to give the Athletics the lead for good. The home run marked the third grand slam of Kurtz’s career and extended his on-base streak to 36 games.
J.T. Ginn earned the win after pitching six innings of one-run baseball. Ginn struck out three batters, walked one and allowed nine hits.
The Cardinals scored their first run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Nathan Church. Iván Herrera later added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Zack Gelof added a solo home run in the eighth inning for the Athletics.
Darell Hernaiz collected three hits in the victory, while Kurtz, Colby Thomas and Michael Stefanic each finished with two hits.
Henry Bolte recorded two hits in his Major League debut after being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier this week. Bolte picked up his first career hit in his first at-bat and later added an RBI sacrifice fly.
Matthew Liberatore took the loss for St. Louis after allowing four runs on nine hits over five innings.
The series concludes Thursday with Michael McGreevy scheduled to start for the Cardinals against Jacob Lopez for the Athletics.
