The Marion County Quorum Court recites the Pledge of Allegiance before Tuesday’s meeting
Tuesday’s meeting of the Marion County Quorum Court failed to secure the votes for funding to purchase land parcels to expand the county quarry.
Ordinance 2026-21 requested to appropriate $139,529 from the County General Fund to purchase nearly 29 acres of adjacent land to the current quarry located west of Yellville of Highway 62/412. One of the parcels would have brought the quarry property right to highway frontage along 62.
A motion to remove section 2 of the ordinance which discussed the need to establish a new county shop failed to pass during discussion. Judge Jason Stumph stated that moving the county shop from it’s current location in Yellville to outside of town in the future would eliminate his dump truck drivers from having to travel along school routes in town each morning.
The Judge also said the current quarry had around four to five years before it would run out of rock and that the county needed to be proactive to prepare. The solutions he stated were to dig deeper with more specialized equipment or expand out by purchasing surrounding tracts.
The ordinance failed with a vote of four in favor and four opposed. Justice of the Peace Colton Jensen was absent from the meeting meaning their was not enough votes for a majority.
In other business an ordinance amending the percentage breakdown of the countywide sales tax beginning June 1 passed unanimously. The new percentages will be 45% for County Road – a 3% increase, 32% for Law Enforcement, 12% Transfer Station – a 3% decrease, and 11% for Rural Fire Departments.
An ordinance appropriating funds for the purchase of ballistic vests for the sheriff’s office passed unanimously. The total cost will be $777.51.
A fund transfer for the 2025 ACC gross payroll audited annual premium also passed unanimously.
The meeting at the Marion County Courthouse lasted 22 minutes.
